MNENJE IN VTISI

Standing Sideways je neverjetna knjiga. Na koncu romana nam pisateljica pojasni, da je del knjige resničen, del pa izmišljen. Prvega oktobra leta 2015 je na Umpqua Community Collage prišlo do streljanja in umrlo je devet ljudi. Med njimi je bil avtoričin bratranec in njo je to zelo pretreslo. Žalovala je in svojo bolečino izlila v odlično zgodbo. Knjigo je posvetila vsem žrtvam in njihovim žalujočim. 

Standing Sideways je mladinski roman, ki ga priporočam za branjem vsem. Tudi odraslim. Zgodbo nam pripoveduje sedemnajst letna Livia Stone, ki je v strelskem napadu izgubila brata dvojčka. Ne predstavlja si kako bo živela brez Jasperja. On je bil njena druga polovica. Naveličana je ljudi, ki jo sprašujejo, če je v redu, naveličana je ljudi, ki ji izražajo sožalje in naveličana je govorjenja svoje psihiatrinje. Potrebuje nekaj drugega, da si olajša bolečino. Zateka se k tabletam, alkoholu in celo seksu. Ali ji bo to pomagalo preživeti in zaživeti na novo?

Livia si na koncu le prizna svojo odvisnost in s pomočjo staršev poišče pomoč. Uresniči svoje sanje in izda knjigo, preko katere širi naprej spomin na brata in pomaga ljudem pri zdravljenju odvisnosti in žalovanja. Seveda se tudi zaljubi in najde svojega princa, ki ji stoji ob strani.

Standing Sideways je veliko več kot knjiga. Nosi ogromno sporočilo in ravno zato me je tako prevzela. Celotna zgodba je zelo čustvena in nepredvidljiva. Če ne bi imela ostalih življenjskih obveznosti, bi jo prebrala v enem dnevu, ker me je čisto priklenila nase. Med branjem sem se nasmejala in imela sem tudi solzne oči. V lik Livie sem se z lahkoto vživela in jo poskusila razumeti. Nisem je obsojala, saj bi tudi mene pretresla izguba sorojenca. Tudi meni je bilo izjemno hudo, ko sem izgubila babico. Določeni odlomki so me spomnili na njo. Čeprav je minilo že nekaj let, jo še vedno pogrešam. 

Pisateljica pa je zgodbo želela še malo popestriti in je notri vnesla še skrivni blog o novicah najstnikov v tem malem mestu. Avtorice bloga ne izvemo. Čeprav sem večkrat posumila, kdo bi lahko bil, nam pisateljica to skrivnost ne izda. Me je pa spomnilo na Opravljivko (Gossip Girl), saj so bile te novice podobne kot pri Opravljivki. 

E-knjigo Standing Sideways sem dobila v zahvalo za iskreno mnenje od Giselle, ki vodi Xpresso Book Tours, kateri se iskreno zahvaljujem, da sem imela to čast in jo lahko prebrala. Zahvalila bi se tudi pisateljici J. Lynn Bailey, za to neverjetno zgodbo, ki jo je delila z nami bralci. Zagotovo bom še posegala po njenih knjigah. Knjigo Standing Sideways pa zelo priporočam in tudi sama jo bom še velikokrat prebrala.

Vse se je začelo z napačno oddajo oglasa, da potrebujejo pomoč. Seveda se je.

Uprizoritev doma pomeni, da se prikažeš v najboljši luči.  Enako načelo velja pri izdelavi filma. Izkazalo se je, da "fluffer" ne ureja dekorativnih blazin na kavču.
Oni urejajo druge stvari, okroglaste objekte.
Služba ni težka. E, Mislim, da je - je o tem, kako ga pripraviš trdega. Pravzaprav...pomagaš drugim ljudem, da postanejo trdi.
O moški...
In tu je drugi problem. Moški. Ne ni eden izmed zvezd v filmu. Will Lotham - moja srednješolska ljubezen. Lastnik hiše kjer snemamo. Nezakonito. V najemu za počitnice.
Ko takrat, ko se pojavi policija, za kar sem mislila, da je samo odlični hišni nastop, ki se je spremenil v nočno moro, ki vključuje sliko mene z nago filmsko zvezdo. Will me je rešil zapora in ponižujoče lekcije v moji lastni naivnosti.
Izkazalo se je, da je moja služba veliko težja, kot sem pričakovala. Ampak veste kaj je lažje kot sem si vedno predstavljala?

  When she reached for the handle this time, she moved even more slowly. The door was a living creature now, something that could possibly harm her.
  Her fingers connected with the metal and kept pressing down. When the door opened, Rose stepped timidly inside.
  A torch, made from a single log and balanced perfectly on a marble perch, burned in the center of the room next to a bathtub.
  Other than that, the only other visible items were crystals of all sizes and shapes. Some hung from string, other larger ones sat on shadowy shelves. Rose walked toward the tub. A single red rose petal floated in the steaming water.
  The door slammed shut. She chose to believe it was a draft. Rose touched the water and then stepped back, a drop of liquid trickled down to her dress. The invitation was clear, but did she dare accept it?
  Would she know when eyes were on her?
  Would she be willing to take a chance?
  Removing her clothes took a good ten minutes. Plenty of time for the water and her resolve to cool. There was no place for her to hang her hat, gown, or her corset, so she rolled them as neatly as she could and placed them on the floor. SYNOPSYS (OPIS)

Rose is unsettled, curious, and bored. Life in a hippie commune is her parent’s dream come true, not hers. She doesn’t share their passion for living off the land, nor does she enjoy the isolation that is thrust upon her. When she convinces them to send her to public school in the nearby town, a new world opens up to her.

As she pursues her education, Rose chooses a different path, leaving her parents heartbroken at her insistence they are hiding something from her. She’s convinced her father isn’t the man her mother married.

Although she finds love far away from her roots and upbringing, her wounds only deepen as she keeps her family at arm’s length. What she loses during those years can only be retrieved with her understanding that “a Rose by any other name is still a Rose.”

Rose je nestabilna, radovedna in zdolgočasena. Življenje v skupnosti hipijev je bila želja njenih staršev in ne njena. Ne čuti strasti do življenja na deželi, niti ne uživa v izolaciji kateri je prepuščena. Ko starše prepriča, da jo pošljejo v javno šolo, ki je v bližini njihovega kraja, se ji odpre popolnoma nov svet.
Ko Rose nadaljuje z izobraževanjem, si izbere drugo smer življenja. Svoje starše pusti z zlomljenim srcem, saj je prepričana, da ji nekaj prikrivajo. Prepričana je, da njen oče ni moški s katerim je mama poročena. 
Čeprav ljubezen najde daleč stran od svojih korenin in vzgoje, so njene rane še globlje, ko ima svojo družino na dosegu roke. Vse kar v teh letih izgubi, si lahko povrne nazaj, če bo razumela, "da je Rose še vedno Rose".

Chief Financial Officers didn’t last long at Illyria. Handling billions of dollars seemed to weigh on even those who chose the profession as a career. The appointment of Violet Cesario had gone against the board’s request. I was the one who selected her, despite the impressive and complete collapse of her last company.

However, the research I conducted on the matter showed more than gross negligence on the part of the company’s owner. I wasn’t going to hold that against her, but the board did, and would, if she didn’t survive her first thirty days. They’d try to hold it against me too. Until I’d not so subtly remind them of the last time they went to war with me.

My question, or goading, didn’t cause even a flicker of anxiety to cross her features. When purposefully hiring new executives, I pushed them, pounded them into the ground, and walked across the ashes of who they were before they came to my company. All this in preparation to make them the best at their job. And yet, my usual tactics didn’t seem to faze her. Not the show I put on as she entered the building, not my goading…which made her more than interesting to me. I’d met far weaker men than the woman sitting across from me with the ice in her eyes.

The board controlled my CFO position, until their last incompetent choice lost us a quarter-million-dollar asset. Now, the board submitted to my selection. And I would prove my choices were irrefutable. If not God damn impeccable. “You’re aware of the thirty-day mandate the board put on your employment?”

She shifted her legs, carefully sliding one long lean calf over her other knee. Not even stockings in the way of her smooth skin’s passage. In any one else, I would have considered it a seduction technique, but not this woman. As if her body language screamed two different things at once: ‘come closer’ and ‘back the hell off’. Or maybe that was the point. Draw them in only to crush them under her four inch heels.

“I’m not sure if that was a question or a statement.” She paused briefly before continuing. “The probationary period is a clause in the contract I signed.” Her tone called me a bastard in the nicest way I’d ever heard it. I loved a little fire in a woman. Even more so in a woman forging an intimate relationship with my money. By the second Violet was accruing more respect than I’d been preparing to dole out.

“Of course,” I said, mimicking her caustic tone. Why did I need a reaction from her so badly?

She gave me nothing but a careful blink.

Maybe working with Violet might prove more fun than I originally estimated. I didn’t interview her personally, and there were no pictures with her file, so when I arrived, I expected a thirty-something powerlifting champion in a pinstriped suit. Violet had almost a delicacy about her inviting wariness. Meeting her in person, I wanted her to do well, for her benefit—not only mine. “I’m here to tell you how you will succeed in your goal.”

A line formed in the middle of her forehead as she considered my words. “And why would you do that? Isn’t it in your best interest to choose the right person for the job, not the make the person fit the job?”

“Usually, but I went to bat to hire you. Challenging the board with my choice. If you succeed, it looks good for me, and it keeps me from having to vet and hire yet another CFO.” I didn’t reveal my ongoing clash with the board about new executive hires. Or that the probationary period resulted from my pushing them about bringing her specifically.

She forced out a controlled sigh, and I watched her for any other outward reactions to me, the conversation, the thirty-day time limit on her employment. Absolutely nothing. Incredible.

“I can see the logic in that.”

I glanced over at Olivia to see if she got a reading on Violet that I missed. Olivia was better than most when it came to insight about other women.

Or maybe I just wanted a stolen moment to watch her. The only woman who eluded me. To be fair, I’d never put in much of the chase to catch her.

Even dressed for work, without the skintight dresses and sky-high heels, she looked like an idea.

Something yet for me to discover.

At the club we both attended, secretly on my part, of course, she always looked even better, more like a revelation.

Something I knew all along.

With her head bent over the notepad she held in one hand, she scribbled in quick, precise strokes. I realized Violet had been talking while I’d been gawking. I glanced up to find a silent Violet studying me with her head cocked to the side.

Between seconds, between heartbeats, between her look and my silence…she knew.

We stared each other down, Olivia completely oblivious to the growing tension stretched taut between Violet and me. A tension built precariously on a shared secret.

Violet repeated what I’d missed. “And what did you suggest, Duke, to preserve my place here?”

My name thrown in a gauntlet was not something I could ignore. I narrowed my eyes at her. I didn’t enjoy puzzles. And the five minutes I’d spent with Violet told me she’d be far more difficult to decipher than most.

“Olivia,” I said, not even looking at her, still grappling in the strangest battle of wills with Violet. “Will you give Ms. Cesario and me a moment?”
